Thankfully, this isn’t a problem if you use INDO Direct Drive® lighting products. Our pioneering LED technology has been specifically designed to improve luminaire reliability and lifetime by removing all wear-out components, primarily the driver. Patented electronics within INDO units ensure the promise of a 25-year lifetime from LED actually delivers. Typical assemblies within the market use a separate “LED driver” which is proven to fail and/or degrade long before the expiry of the LED’s serviceable life. Costly bulk driver changes or reactive maintenance is therefore typically required after around 8-10 years of operation. So… #### Why Traditional Drivers Fail Why is it that LED drivers are notorious for failing in an industry where products are marketed as having a lifetime of 20 years or more? One key reason is the use of wet electrolytic capacitors. These are inherent wear-out components which store charge and are housed within all traditional LED drivers, often deployed in two parts of the driver circuit. Capacitors comprise a liquid electrolyte which will naturally evaporate over time, (incidentally at a quicker rate at higher temperatures) altering the component properties. Depending on their position in the circuit, this failure results in a ‘catastrophic’ failure of the LED driver. Once the rated life of these components is reached, a high level of failures will be observed, hence the need for bulk replacement. #### How Direct Drive® Works INDO has eliminated the need for a driver; - by employing a very particular LED system configuration; and - using innovative design of the control circuitry. It is this combination of advanced electronics engineering which enables the LED current to be carefully regulated, directly from mains voltage. #### Built From The Ground Up A proudly British innovation, which first came to market in 2010, the technology was developed by INDO’s Product Engineering Team, who took a much more strategic approach to luminaire design. While manufacturers pull components and building blocks together from different companies to create their product design, INDO designs all its own circuitry in-house. The team built the LED system from the ground up, rather than simply replicating the traditional HID luminaire manufacturing process. Their aim was to better meet customer needs by matching the lifetime of ALL parts of the luminaire electronics to that of the LEDs themselves. Critically, this has been achieved whilst ensuring equal or improved luminaire reliability, performance and functionality. #### Thermal and Electrical Advantages The lifetime of electronic components follows the “Arrhenius Law” which says that, for every 10° hotter the device is operated, its lifetime is halved. Since an LED driver is both bulky and hot (around 30-40° hotter than the ambient temperature in fact), removing it facilitates more rigorous application of thermal design principles, which play such an important role in product reliability and lifetime - Strategic location of the remaining heat-producing components, means the circuitry can monitor and react to the operating temperature of all system parts in a more integrated way, ensuring everything works within its limits. - Thermal management can be singly focused on transferring heat away from the LEDs. The end result is a system under much less stress, thus exponentially improving both lifetime and reliability - Having no ‘end of life’ failure modes and fewer components on board means the circuit is naturally more stable - Absence of the driver allows for a more robust, streamlined and lightweight product form with space for additional integrations - Dimming as low as 10% output is possible whilst maintaining a power factor close to unity - Direct Drive® units are highly suited to continuous operation in high temperature environments #### Customer Benefits Being able to “identify, eliminate and control foreseeable risks that could arise at any time during the lifetime of a highway scheme” is one of the foremost reasons why Direct Drive® is so beneficial to the public lighting sector. However, there are additional far-reaching advantages: - Maintenance requirements reduced to a simple clean and electrical test schedule - Improved reliability and public safety - Fewer public complaints and civil claims - Better whole-life management of health and safety risk - Significant energy and capital cost savings - Quicker payback - Small size and weight of the fittings means more can be stored in installers’ vehicles, increasing productivity - Quick and simple for a single operative to lift into position and wire in - Reduced column loading - Confidence the system will achieve and sustain the maintenance factor used in initial designs - More sustainable and environmentally friendly solution: elimination of unnecessary manufacturing and its associated resources PLUS significantly less WEEE waste (drivers and photocells) ending up in landfill throughout a scheme’s lifetime. - Equal and improved product specifications - High quality electrical performance enabling better CMS response and control - Removal of capacitors reduces stress on the power network normally caused by driver inrush current - Excellent lumen maintenance, enhanced by CLO - Eliminate issues around driver replacements, rewiring, onward driver and surge protection compatibility - Delivers everything traditional LED fittings can, and more - One warranty covers the entire luminaire, no third party parts - Designed and made in the UK with high quality-controlled manufacturing - Public procurement that provides taxpayers with demonstrably better value for money #### A Growing Trend Direct Drive® first came to market in 2010 with the company’s retrofit lamp products; designed specifically for highway bollards and sign lights (T5UE and PLUE). Since then, the technology has been scaled and rolled out across the company’s street lighting luminaire range, decorative lanterns and retrofit gear trays. As councils are increasingly challenged to find more ways to save money whilst simultaneously improving performance using environmentally sustainable solutions, INDO Direct Drive is able to tick all those boxes and more. The benefits which this technology offers the lighting industry were recognised in 2017 when INDO was granted the highly prestigious Queen's Award for Innovation. The success story was subsequently picked up by the Telegraph Business Club, who produced this film for us: https://youtu.be/z6h3beZyeyM To date, INDO now has around 500,000 Direct Drive® units installed across the UK and Europe. The business is expanding rapidly year on year. We’ve been increasingly successful in getting the Direct Drive® product range onto public sector procurement frameworks and continue to win many LED lighting upgrade contracts supplying thousands of products to clients across the country; from the Scottish Highlands and Cumbria through to Wales, Milton Keynes and Essex. INDO has become a leading brand in the UK public lighting sector, setting new standards for genuine long life, driver-less LED lighting products where access to fittings and product reliability are mission-critical factors Contact us for more information. ## Exterior lighting Source: https://indolighting.com/exterior-lighting/ INDO · Exterior Lighting ### Exterior Lighting UK-designed LED street lighting and gear trays built to last over 25 years. Direct Drive® runs the LED string straight from mains power, so the driver and its wet electrolytic capacitors are not in the fitting to fail. Around 500,000 units are installed across the UK and Europe. - 15-year warranty - 25-year design life - Around 500,000 units installed - Designed and manufactured in the UK ### Why specify LED street lighting from INDO LED street lighting has a predictable weak point. The LEDs are rated for 100,000 hours, but the driver is not: it carries wet electrolytic capacitors that dry out in service. Driver failures typically start arriving after 8 to 10 years, sooner in fittings that run hot, and by then the original part is often obsolete. INDO's answer was to take the driver out. The control circuitry regulates the LED current directly from mains voltage. That is the whole argument, and it has been in the field since 2010. Direct Drive®. No more driver changes. Ever. How Direct Drive works → ### The driverless advantage Removing the driver changes what a street lighting asset costs to own. #### Nothing to schedule There is no driver to replace, so there is no mid-life bulk change to programme, no access visit to fund, and no obsolete part to source in year 12. Maintenance planning comes down to cleaning and electrical testing, not a programmed electronics replacement. #### Warranty that matches the asset A 15-year warranty as standard, covering the whole luminaire. The luminaire is engineered to a 25-year design life, matched to the rated life of the LEDs themselves. #### Less heat where it does the damage A traditional driver runs 30 to 40°C above ambient inside the housing. With no driver in the fitting, the thermal design can be built around the LEDs. Direct Drive® first came to market in 2010 and won the Queen's Award for Innovation in 2017. A Direct Drive® lamp goes into the existing lampholder. #### Retrofit gear tray The original lantern is kept and a drop-in Direct Drive tray replaces the original SON or HPS gear, matching the photometry at a fraction of the energy. This is the standard route for heritage and conservation schemes. INDO builds retrofit gear trays for 300+ heritage and street lanterns, one of Europe's largest ranges, and a tray carries the same IP66 rating and 15-year warranty as a new luminaire. The heritage retrofit page covers that route in full. #### New luminaire Where the lantern is beyond economic repair, a new Direct Drive luminaire goes onto the existing column. Weight and windage are on every INDO datasheet. #### Got a lantern that is not on the list? Send us a photograph of the bowl and the gear and we will come back with a fit and a quote. See the gear tray compatibility list → ### Designed and manufactured in Southampton INDO designs and manufactures at its own factory in Southampton, next to one of the UK's busiest ports. That is how the specials work: a non-standard optic or mounting is a conversation with the people who build it rather than a change request sent overseas. Around 500,000 Direct Drive® units are installed across the UK and Europe, on residential streets, distributor roads, motorway corridors, footpaths and listed structures. The technology has been in service since 2010. - Queen's Award for Innovation, 2017 - On public sector procurement frameworks - Supplied to UK local authorities, highways contractors and lighting engineers See recent projects → ### Getting a price Three things set the price: lighting class, column spacing and quantity. Send those and you will get a price back. If it is easier to talk it through, leave your details and a member of the team will call you back, usually within one working day. #### What to send us - Road or lighting class - Column spacing, mounting height and existing lantern type - Quantity, and whether this is a rolling programme or a single scheme Or call the team on 023 8098 2022, or email info@indo.co.uk ### Common questions #### What is Direct Drive®? Direct Drive is INDO's patented driverless LED architecture. The LED string runs straight from mains power, so there is no driver and no wet electrolytic capacitor in the luminaire. It came to market in 2010 and won the Queen's Award for Innovation in 2017. #### Why does removing the driver matter? The driver is the component that sets the maintenance interval. Failures typically start arriving after 8 to 10 years, sooner in fittings that run hot, which is well inside the life of the LEDs and usually outside the warranty. Take the driver out and that whole event goes away. #### If there is no driver, how do you dim it? The control circuitry regulates LED current directly from mains voltage. Dimming as low as 10% output is possible while maintaining a power factor close to unity, and the range includes DALI, pre-set dimming and Zhaga D4i sensor-ready options. The technology page explains how the circuit works. #### What warranty do INDO street lights carry? A 15-year warranty as standard on every Direct Drive luminaire, covering the whole luminaire. The luminaire is engineered to a 25-year design life. #### Can I keep my existing lanterns? Usually, yes. A retrofit lamp changes only the light source; a retrofit gear tray replaces the gear inside the original lantern and keeps its appearance, which is the normal route for heritage and conservation areas. INDO builds retrofit gear trays for 300+ heritage and street lanterns, one of Europe's largest ranges. #### Do you supply UK local authorities? Yes. Local authorities and highways contractors are INDO's core exterior customers, and the Direct Drive range is on public sector procurement frameworks. Recent schemes are published on the projects page. #### Where are INDO products made? Designed and manufactured at INDO's factory in Southampton, Hampshire. ### Talk to the specification team Send the scheme, the class and the column spacing and you will get a price back. 023 8098 2022 | info@indo.co.uk ## Products ### AIR2 Page: https://indolighting.com/product/air2/ AIR2 is an INDO Direct Drive LED street light, 2,000 to 24,000 lumens at up to 174 lm/W, for roads, car parks, rail, airports and town centres. #### Key features - POWERED BY DIRECT DRIVE® - WIDE DIMMING RANGE - Universal, integrated mounting - No external spigot required - Lightweight 7.9kg, low windage - Integrated long-life photocell - Superior optical performance - 35W to 250W replacement - ENEC Approved #### Specifications - Electrical, Power factor: >0.95 - Electrical, Surge protection: 20kV differential mode, 20kV common mode - Electrical, Voltage (V): 195 to 265V - Photometric, Lumen output: 3,000 - 24,000 - Photometric, Colour rendering index (CRI): > 70 - Photometric, Constant light output: Yes - Photometric, Correlated colour temperature (CCT): 2200K, 2700K, 3000K, 4000K, 5000K - Photometric, LED efficacy: up to 200 lm/W - Photometric, Lens type: DR1 to DR5, M00 to M10, P00 to P05 - Photometric, S/P ratio (@4000K): Chroma Module 1.6, Navigator Module 1.5 - Physical, Dimensions: 670mm (L) x 280mm (W) x 127mm (D) - Physical, Luminaire colour: Grey, Jet Black - Physical, Mounting: Post top (60-76 mm) and Side entry (34-60 mm), Universal - Physical, Weight: 7.9kg - Physical, Windage: 0.065m2 - Controls, CMS compatible: Yes - Controls, Control: 20mm Pre-drilled, NEMA (3 pin), NEMA (5 pin), NEMA (7 pin) - Controls, Dimming: DALI, Dimmed to 50% [00:00 to 05:00], Dimmed to 75% [00:00 to 05:00], Dimmed to program, No dimming - Controls, Direct Drive: Yes - Controls, PIR sensor: Yes - Controls, Switch regime (integrated photocell): 20/20 lux, 35/18 lux, 55/28 lux, Not activated, Not fitted - Ratings, ENEC approved: Yes - Ratings, IP rating: IP66 - Ratings, Lumen maintenance (L91B50): 100,000 hrs - Ratings, Operating temperature range: -40 degrees C (min) to +40 degrees C (max) - Ratings, Optical risk group: RG1 - Ratings, Reliability (failures per million hrs): 0.82 #### Description INDO AIR2 represents a shift-change in mid-power LED luminaires. AIR1 was the first-ever streetlight designed to function without a driver, resulting in substantial capital, whole-life cost and maintenance savings. The pioneering innovation mitigates against long term risk for highway workers and lowers environmental impact by removing the need to replace and waste wear-out components throughout a scheme’s lifetime. To bring AIR1 into line with its higher-powered variants, we have now streamlined the offering, bringing together all the features of the original AIR1, AIR1+ and AIR1 DALI specifications into one single module, (the OPUS2). Using all new CSP LED technology, OPUS2 offers improved reliability and lm/W efficiency, as well as boosted surge protection and a better glare rating, ideal for the residential type applications where AIR1 performs so well. Designed and manufactured in the United Kingdom, this innovative product takes a different approach to all other greenhouse and nursery lighting systems on the market; it is built and operates without the need for an LED driver, improving reliability and lifetime as well as saving growers money and operational hassle. Direct Drive®. No more driver changes The Direct Drive® technology was developed by INDO back in 2010 utilising advanced circuitry design to control the LEDs as opposed to a dedicated driver. Driver degradation or malfunction has been shown to be responsible for over 50% of all LED light fitting failures; primarily due to wet electrolytic capacitors within the circuit that inherently wear out over time. Indeed this wear-out process happens at a faster rate within high ambient temperature environments, such as greenhouses. Other LED grow lights on the market use this traditional technology and therefore require driver replacements every 4-6 years. INDO ELEMENT, by contrast, does not. There is no bulky, heat-producing driver on board, enabling a series of revolutionary improvements in product design and function: - Up to 250,000 hours lifetime with our 10-year warranty - More streamlined, lightweight product form that’s quick and easy to install, access and clean - Cooler unit running temperature; guaranteeing longer life and superior reliability - With the exception of cleaning, INDO ELEMENT is maintenance-free having no driver to replace Chip Innovation. No more red degradation Our goal with the INDO ELEMENT was to eliminate, as far as possible, all the unreliable, shifting properties of traditional grow lights. To ensure crops are exposed to spectral conditions that don’t change over the life of the LED lighting system and eliminate any mixing of LED technology. We identified an issue with red LEDs that, over time, they typically degrade faster than blue LEDs resulting in spectral shift causing inconsistent growth rates and production yields. As a result, INDO ELEMENT only uses blue LEDs offering growers these benefits: - Closer spectral match to plant requirements - Improved long term light output stability - Zero spectral degradation over the product lifetime ELEMENT Datasheet > ### TopLink Page: https://indolighting.com/product/toplink/ TopLink is our Direct Drive LED top light for glasshouses: 400W to 800W, red or broad spectrum, IP66 and a 10-year warranty. It comes in a red or a broad spectrum, with individually controllable channels and a tunable spectrum option, so the spectrum can be matched to the crop. Two housing lengths cover the range: 929mm x 265mm x 78mm for the 600W and 800W units, and 629mm x 265mm x 78mm for the 400W. #### Direct Drive reliability TopLink is built on Direct Drive®, our own driverless LED technology. It regulates the LED current straight from the mains, which removes the separate driver and the wet electrolytic capacitors inside it: the wear-out components that make conventional LED luminaires fail long before the LEDs do. No more driver changes. Ever. #### Output and control Each luminaire delivers up to 2550 µmol/s, at an efficacy of up to 3.54 µmol/J. Dimming runs over DALI, 0-10V or Bluetooth, so TopLink can be driven by an existing climate computer or run on its own. Input is 230 VAC or 400 VAC, power factor is better than 0.9, and 10kV differential mode and 6kV common mode surge protection is fitted as standard. #### Build and environment The aluminium body doubles as the heatsink, under a clear glass lens. Optic and gear are both rated IP66, and the luminaire is rated from -40°C to +40°C at up to 95% relative humidity, which is what year round glasshouse running actually asks of a fixture. Net weight is under 10kg: light enough for one person to lift into position on the hanging brackets supplied, and slim enough to keep shadowing off the crop below. TopLink is manufactured under an ISO 9001:2015 certified management system. See the rest of our horticultural lighting range, or talk to us about the right specification for your crop and your set-up. ### VertiLink Page: https://indolighting.com/product/vertilink/ VertiLink is our LED grow light bar for commercial vertical farms: Direct Drive, crop-tuned spectrums, full dimming and a 10-year warranty. #### Key features - High-output LED bars for commercial vertical farms, built for 16 hour duty cycles. Energy consumption is very low: a circuit wattage of just 6W for the flashing BLUE and 8W for the static CLUE, both creating a highly conspicuous light output. The units also offer market-leading service lifetime that’s set purely by the lifetime of the LEDs themselves. Financially, payback periods of less than two years are typical. As you’d expect, the BLUE and CLUE make use of INDO’s unique Direct Drive® circuit, meaning unreliable capacitors have been removed from the circuit, drastically reducing lamp maintenance. In addition, the highly unreliable, rotating flashing unit has been designed out of the system. Direct Drive® is a technology that lends itself well to the regular switching required in a flashing beacon unit; more so than some other switched-mode power supply technologies. Having no driver also means the housing is streamlined and light. These neat models have been specifically designed so as not to put any stress on the lampholder and, at just 90g, is one of the lightest LED Belisha Lamps on the market. #### Request a quote or a call back Tell us how many lamps you need, whether you want the flashing BLUE or the static CLUE, and which lampholder fitting your beacons use. We will come back to you with availability, lead time and a price for that quantity. Not sure which fitting your beacons use? Send us a photograph and we will tell you. #### Which lamp do I need? Both lamps are direct retrofits, so the existing beacon globe, post and lampholder all stay in place. - BLUE: the flashing option, for a standard flashing Belisha beacon at a zebra crossing. - CLUE: the static option, for central island and refuge beacons that run continuously. Both are available in B22 or E27 lampholder fittings. If you are not sure which fitting your beacons use, send us a photograph and we will tell you. #### Replacing existing Belisha beacon lamps Because these are retrofit lamps rather than complete beacon units, a changeover is a lamp swap: no new columns, no new globes, no civils and no road closure beyond the normal working practice for that site. The rotating flashing mechanism that fails most often in a conventional beacon is removed from the system entirely, so the recurring visit to replace it disappears with it. That is where the maintenance saving comes from, and it is the reason payback periods of under two years are typical rather than optimistic. #### Supply, specification and procurement INDO designs and manufactures in the UK, and the Direct Drive® range is carried on public sector procurement frameworks, so for most local authority buyers these lamps can be bought through a route you already hold. Whether you are costing a crossing refurbishment programme, specifying for a framework, or replacing failed beacon lamps on a reactive basis, we can help with quantities, lampholder compatibility and lead times. Talk to us or request a call back and we will come back to you with availability and pricing for your quantity. #### Availability and how to buy Both lamps are designed and manufactured by INDO in the UK and supplied from our Southampton base, so you are buying from the manufacturer rather than through a chain of resellers. For most local authority buyers the Direct Drive® range is carried on public sector procurement frameworks, so it can usually be bought through a route you already hold. We quote per order rather than publishing a list price, because the quantity, the lampholder fitting and whether you need flashing or static units all move it. Lead time is confirmed with the quotation for the same reason. To get a price, tell us: - how many lamps, and whether they are for zebra crossings (flashing BLUE) or central island and refuge beacons (static CLUE); - the lampholder fitting, B22 or E27: send a photograph if you are not sure; (Continues on the page.) ### BLADE Core Page: https://indolighting.com/product/blade-core/ BLADE Core is our sensor-ready LED street light with Zhaga and DALI D4i: up to 8,000 lumens, 200 lm/W, 4.5kg and OptiFlex optics. #### Key features - Zhaga D4i Compatible - Sensor Ready - Tool-less maintenance option - Dimmable - High output up to 8 klm - Lightweight fitting (4.5kg) - Wide range of PT/SE mounting options - Class-leading thermal management - Lamp efficacy up to 200 lm/W #### Specifications - Electrical, Power factor: >0.9 - Electrical, Power: 3W - 60W - Electrical, Electrical class: Class I (NEMA and Zhaga)Class II Option (Zhaga only) - Electrical, Voltage (V): 176 to 305V - Photometric, Lumen output: 500 - 8,000 - Photometric, Colour rendering index (CRI): > 70 - Photometric, Constant light output: Yes - Photometric, Correlated colour temperature (CCT): 2,200K to 6,500K - Photometric, LED efficacy: 200 lm/W - Photometric, Lens type: INDO OptiFlex™ Technology - Physical, Dimensions: 570mm (L) x 180mm (W) x 100mm (D) - Physical, Mounting: SE 34-60mm (-15° to +15°)PT 60-76mm (-15° to +15°) - Physical, Maintenance: Tool-less Access Option - Physical, Weight: 4.5kg - Physical, Shields available?: Yes - Physical, Luminaire colour: RAL7040 (GREY)RAL9005 (BLACK) - Controls, CMS compatible: Yes - Controls, Control: Zhaga SR or NEMA - Controls, Dimming: DALI, Dimmed to 50% [00:00 to 05:00], Dimmed to 75% [00:00 to 05:00], Dimmed to program, No pre-set dimming - Controls, Direct Drive: No - Controls, Zhaga protocol: D4i - Ratings, IP rating: IP66 - Ratings, Lumen maintenance (L70): 500,000 hours - Ratings, Operating temperature range: -40°C to +40°C #### Description The BLADE Core is our street light for towns and cities that want control as well as light. The PLUE’s extremely low energy (circuit wattage of 3.5W) long life and high reliability (MTTF of 535,000 hours) make this an attractive choice even when compared to de-illumination options. Financially, payback periods of under 2 years are typical, with an ROI well in excess of 1,000%. The PLUE range makes use of the INDO Direct Drive™ circuit, meaning that all wear-out components have been removed from the circuit. An evaluation carried out by external consultants using calculation methods defined in military handbook MIL-HDBK-217F estimated the life of the circuitry to be greater than 100 years when operated under normal UK conditions. INDO’s patent-pending integrated photo sensing technology can be added as an optional extra, providing switching to Elexon regime 100. This unique feature allows a 24-hour burning circuit to be upgraded to a night-only circuit by a simple lamp change. Furthermore, the design life of the photo-sensing circuit matches that of the LEDs, ensuring maintenance-free operation for decades. The standby power consumption of the photo-sensing circuit is only 0.1W, a fraction of the industry-standard 0.25W. The optical risk group of this lamp, according to IEC 62471, is RG1. This means the source does not present a retinal blue light hazard. Furthermore, testing determines the lamp to be in the “exempt group” for actinic UV hazard, near UV hazard, retinal thermal hazard and infrared hazard. This testing has been conducted on an LED level, which as outlined in IEC TR62778 can be transferred to the luminaire level.
