Project Detail
Kier is a leading highway service provider, managing 30,000km of the UK’s strategic and local authority road network. They handle planning, programming and delivery of motorway lighting schemes as well as routine maintenance and operation. Having been awarded the contract for Highways England Area 4 in 2020, Kier Highways is responsible for the M2 motorway and its linked structures including the Medway Viaduct.
Kier approached INDO to propose a lighting package and design that would achieve the required lighting levels along the Medway stretch of the M2, using existing column locations and significantly reducing energy. Another key objective was to ensure the existing HPS Philips ‘Trafficvision’ SGS 306 lanterns (primarily 400W SON-T) would be upgraded with either lower or equivalent weight units and reduced windage.
INDO provided a range of product options for the client to consider. The final approved solution used the INDO AIR3 at 31,000 lumens, easily delivering the required M2 lighting class with a low glare, G4-rated optic. In fact, the scheme design features a threshold increment at 4.8%, less than half the maximum tolerance. The end result is an extremely well-lit motorway that’s visually comfortable for all users. The site is fairly unusual, featuring a protected pedestrian walkway alongside the motorway, across the viaduct as well as a train line running parallel. INDO received installation drawings from the client to review and define the parameters for the required lighting designs. This included taking measurements to identify existing spacings and setback geometries to ensure the lighting design was indicative of on-site conditions.
Using the INDO AIR3 at 4000K, energy savings over 60% have been achieved using a product with no driver, meaning no bulk driver change or maintenance issues throughout the scheme’s lifetime and weighing just 11.2kg; a full 2kg lighter than the original lanterns, and approximately 50% lighter than competitor equivalent LED solutions.
Feedback from the client has been excellent:
Our client is really pleased with the end result. The team found the lanterns easy to work with; and the weight was a definite plus particularly when working in a bucket 12m in the air!
