Westminster City Council Awards Heritage Gear Tray Project to INDO Lighting

Following extensive trials, Westminster City Council has awarded its prestigious Heritage Gear Tray scheme to INDO Lighting.

The planned roll-out is part of the City’s LED rollout programme and supports the council’s ‘City for All’ vision; delivering a beautifully lit nighttime environment that meets current lighting standards whilst maintaining Westminster’s world-class heritage aesthetic. The programme also supports the healthier and greener city initiative, crime reduction policy and clean air manifesto as well as delivering a key element of the highways capital programme.

Around 6500 heritage lanterns in Westminster will be upgraded to LED as part of the project with 80% being of the famous Grey Wornum type. The existing HID lamp, gear and reflector plate are removed from the lantern and replaced entirely with INDO’s unique Direct Drive LED gear tray and, in many cases, fully sealed tear-drop or round bowl.

There are 13 main variants of the original lanterns, which INDO’s bespoke gear tray solutions can retrofit using just eight designs.  This improves installation time as well as simplifying future maintenance and stock holding requirements.

In 2019, following the trials conducted by FM Conway of three manufacturers’ solutions across 6 streets, INDO was recommended to Westminster City Council (WCC). The INDO solution was the most cost-effective and provided the most efficient installation process due to our offering of sealed bowls within the gear tray range. INDO’s unique, integrated photocell was also seen as a key benefit providing a fail-safe back-up to support the CMS system being rolled out at the same time.

INDO and FM Conway have worked collaboratively to ensure the optimum solutions were established with reduced SKU, lowest possible energy consumption and simple installation and maintenance.

The project has successfully started on time and kept to program, despite COVID-19 hitting early in the first of a two-year roll-out. Regular communications between the project team at FM Conway, client lead from WCC and INDO delivery team have ensured that COVID has not delayed the project.  Indeed the team is currently looking at ways to potentially accelerate the programme to realise energy and carbon savings earlier than planned.
